This post is sweet and simple – a reminder that breaking away from your regular routine can be just what you need. Rejuvenate your body and mind by stepping away from an ordinary day and trying something new or going somewhere you’ve not been before!
As human beings, it’s only natural that we look for patterns and enjoy building routines that are familiar to us and keep us in-check. However, it tends to get pretty dull after a while, doesn’t it? Go to work Monday to Friday, come home each night and cook dinner, veg for a bit and then go to bed? Then repeat. I find it’s important to step back from your regular routine and do something off-schedule once in a while. Take a normal weekday off. Catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in some time. Start (and finish) a new project alone or with a partner. Go for a workout/yoga class. See a concert/play/movie. Read a book alone. Travel somewhere locally or abroad to explore and reawaken your curiosity. Whatever it takes to throw a little excitement into your week/month!
It’s easy to get stuck in life’s routine and forget that you need a break from every day once in a while. Doing something out of the ordinary every so often will stimulate senses and cognitive thinking that may not be firing during your “average day”; it helps to keep you on your toes, look at things from a new perspective and also gives you a break from daily stresses that you may not realize are bearing down on you. Just like how it’s a good idea to step away from a task when you’ve hit a road block and can’t press on, a little you time once in a while will likely enhance your overall happiness and productivity levels, and help you refresh. By shifting your focus from home/work to something different/newly stimulating, you may even get the boost you need to return to your normal day ready and raring to go.
Every few months, I start to feel like things in my life have become a little too routine or are not challenging/stimulating enough, or I just get a lazy/‘blah’ feeling going about my day (I’m very good at expressing how I feel – can you tell?). And that’s when I try to take a break, regroup and do something that takes me away from my routine and out of my comfort zone. One of the activities that works well for me (which my fiancé wants to kill me for each time) is re-organizing – usually it’s moving furniture around to keep things interesting and try something different. The task challenges me to think outside the box, while attempting to make a change that is visually pleasing, functional and that allows me to focus on and control the task at hand and forget about the rest of the world (a problem-solving puzzle that can sometimes take hours to satisfy). Whenever I get the itch to do this, I feel revived and ready for the whatever comes next. It’s just one of the things that works for me.
These little breaks and the results from each will vary for each person. One person may find that going to a yoga class really isn’t their cup of tea compared to another who finds that weekly class truly gives them the break they need and refreshes their body and mind. And a big break (a trip perhaps) comes highly recommended at least once a year! So try breaking your routine – whatever your mood or feelings, everyone needs a break from every day once in a while. Go. Do. Try something new!
