Most Toronto-area locals know of the outlet malls in Markham and Mississauga where you can get some great deals and avoid paying retail prices. But there are a few times of year that some of the big names (like Zwilling J.A. Henckels) host a warehouse sale and these are sales you don’t want to miss.
Twice a year, we (ahem, DP mostly) like to stop in at the Zwilling Warehouse Sale in Markham - I believe they host it four times each year. If you need any kind of kitchen wares (and if you are looking for some quality equipment, in particular, knives), this is the place to pick it up. You also need to know what you are looking for in terms of their product lines. Items are usually anywhere from 20-80% off and items with slight product defects (B grade) are also available [and are a steal in terms of price]. All of our ‘professional’ chef knives have come from attending these sales. We have spent over $1000 in the three trips that we have made there over the last 2 years (just under $400 on our last run), but we have saved much more than that compared to buying retail or even at sale prices. They also carry an assortment of toiletries and beauty/make-up products at warehouse prices (Tweezerman products are popular at my house).
In terms of the experience, if you can’t stand crowds and hectic, crazy shoppers, this event is not for you. We usually arrive about 45 minutes to an hour before opening and wait in line… and are usually the second group to be let into the warehouse. They let in 50 people at a time, though there are certainly more than 150 inside within the first hour and it is madness. Navigating a shopping cart through a sea of shoppers is pretty hard, so we suggest going in pairs – one person to man the cart and shop at a ‘Sunday drive’ pace and the other to do a faster walk-through and bring back good finds. We usually grab everything that we think we want and spend about 20 minutes near the end sorting and deciding on what we should and shouldn’t buy, and put the rest back. The good stuff goes fast, so you have to be quick!
Here are a few items that we have purchased – you can see the ‘original price’ and the warehouse price.
