Yay, the warm weather is on its way! For us, that means it’s time to start project planning related to the realm of woodworking. We were lucky enough to have a decently mild March, and April is looking promising too. Project #1 is already underway.
Last month, DP decided that he needed a heavy-duty work bench to start the year out right. For the past two weeks, he’s been putting together a hardy work bench (with my assistance here and there of course). This past weekend, we spent an afternoon cutting plywood to glue onto other side of the previously glued two by fours that make up the table top. A piece of plywood on either side will provide more stability and a more reliable flat surface. DP also screwed the plywood to the two by fours (because more strength). The two by four legs are cut and glued already and just need to be assembled to the table top. Plus, we’ll be adding a shelf or two and perhaps some ‘extra features’ like wheels, leveling feet and a vise.
A few other projects that we have on our to do list for this season include building a picnic table (this will be our second one built together), a below the counter shelf for effective kitchen appliance storage, a large planter for alongside our shed, some shelving for inside our shed, and a hall storage bench (for shoes and winter gear). During the spring/summer, we often spend our weekends working on assembling and completing these projects, and I don’t expect this year to be any different. We both enjoy a challenge, as well as learning new skills that we can utilize to make improvements around the house.
Some of our past projects include a misting picnic table, a jewellery stand, multiple fish/tv stands, a rolling pantry/spice rack, shelving for storage, a vegetable planter, and the list goes on. Five years ago, we had only our high school woodworking class under our belts. With that basic knowledge, we continue to experiment and learn from each project as we go. Woodworking is a very practical skill and one we both want to develop further, so we keep thinking up new projects that we can take on together.
Do you have any plans to take on a new hobby this season? What hobbies have you adopted in the past? Why do you enjoy them?
